Michael Skindell hopes to tackle economy, jobs in Ohio Senate District 23
When Michael Skindell saw the absentee ballot count early Tuesday evening, he was relieved more than elated.
Skindell had a substantial lead over Nicholas Celebrezze and Ron "Mickey" Mottl in the race to become Democratic candidate for the 23rd District Ohio Senate seat.
Skindell believed his lead would hold. It did as more returns trickled in. The feeling of relief settled in deeper.
"It's been three-four months of hard work, trying to get the message out about the work I've done in the Ohio General Assembly," Skindell said.
Skindell's 70 or so supporters were also confident. By 9:45 p.m. they were leaving an election-night party at his West 117th Street-Lorain Avenue campaign headquarters.
According to final, unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, Skindell won Tuesday's primary with 47 percent of the vote.
Mottl had 28 percent of the vote while Celebrezze had 25 percent.
The vote counts were 13,490 for Skindell, 8,156 for Mottl and 7,148 for Celebrezze.
Skindell has been state representative in the 13th House District for eight years. He wants to continue his work in the state legislature but can't run for another House term due to term limits.
To make it back to Columbus, Skindell will have to face Republican candidate Dave Morris in November. But Tuesday was a good start.
Skindell said his secret to success was grass-roots campaigning. He knocked on doors, called voters, mailed flyers and attended events.
Skindell said he will use that approach as he prepares for the runoff in November.
Skindell said if he's elected, his first priority will be to move the economy forward and create jobs.
The 23rd District seat will be vacated in January by Sen. Dale Miller, who is running for the new Cuyahoga County Council.
